Somerset Patriots Stamp Ticket to Championship Series
The New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, Somerset Patriots are on their way to the Eastern League Championship Series for the second time in three seasons following a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats in the second game of a best-of-three series. Somerset sweeps that series 2-0.
Spencer Jones, the New York Yankees number two overall prospect was once again the center of attention, lining a base hit in the top of the tenth inning to right field, scoring Max Burt from around third to give Somerset the 4-3 lead.
Jones (2-for-5, RBI) extended his on-base streak to ten games, over which he’s 14-for-39 (.358) with three homers, six RBI and seven runs scored. He’s also riding a three-game hit streak.
Jesus Liranzo got the save in the bottom of the tenth inning, working around a walk thanks to a nifty double-play started by shortstop Alexander Vargas. Reliever Leonardo Pestana was credited with the win for tossing 1.2 hitless innings.
Earlier in the night, Vargas opened the scoring by working out an infield single, much the same way he did to end Game 1 of this series. This time a throwing error allowed Somerset to score two runs to take an early 2-0 lead.
Rafael Flores homered for Somerset in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-1.
Hartford would come back in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs, chasing Somerset starter Zach Messinger, who did well overall on the night. Messinger gave up two runs over 6.2 innings of work for a no-decision.
Hartford’s Adael Amador had the game-tying hit for the Yard Goats in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Ry Anderson.
