Spanish & Special Needs Teacher

Idania Rodriguez is a Spanish and Special Needs Teacher at Princeton Public Schools and has been in her chosen profession for over 20 years! She’s an extraordinary educator whose hard work, compassion, and dedication touch the lives of students, parents, and colleagues. Idania wears many hats at school, teaching AP and Special Needs Spanish with unparalleled skill and care. Her classes not only inspire academic excellence but also create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
Beyond the classroom, Idania is a champion for the school community. She takes the lead in organizing a school-wide assembly for Hispanic Heritage Month, an event that beautifully showcases the talents and cultures of students and staff. She also dedicates herself to supporting the Latino and ESL communities by organizing events that connect parents to the school and provide vital resources to ensure their success.
She pours her heart into celebrating her colleagues by planning events that acknowledge personal milestones to foster a strong sense of camaraderie among the staff.
Idania is the leader of the Latinos Unidos Club and has organized workshops for ESL families to keep them informed on the latest news regarding immigration, and she also teaches Special Ed Spanish classes so that all students can have the language credit to fulfill graduation requirements.
Idania Rodriguez is a busy lady both in and out of the classroom, and she is the embodiment of a true leader. This is why she’s being inducted into the 2025 Class of Teachers Who Make Magic!
Christina Scolaro
Kindergarten Teacher

Christina Scolaro has been teaching Kindergarten at John P. Faber Elementary for 9 years and has not only demonstrated outstanding commitment to academic excellence but has also gone above and beyond in fostering a nurturing and supportive learning environment for her students. She possesses a rare ability to connect with each student on a personal level, understanding their individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Through this personalized approach, Christina creates a classroom atmosphere where every student feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. Christina is also a leader among her peers and is currently the grievance chair for the DEA. Teachers and administration throughout the school seek her input as it pertains to special education law. Christina has been a mentor to many paraprofessionals and acts as an aid to the administration by taking on students with behavioral issues. Christina is also involved in extracurricular activities. She currently serves as the Co-Director of the “Before and After Care” program. The program plays an extremely important role within the community as it provides parents with a necessary service. In the program she works with students of all ages, provides the students with an enrichment schedule, and is in constant communication with parents. Christina owns Stars Fastpitch which is a travel softball organization. She has used this platform to give back to the community by holding a softball forum for all of Dunellen’s players, recreation through high school, and has offered a free softball camp for the girls in the summer. For all she does both in and out of the classroom, Christina Scolaro is now in the 2025 Class of Teachers Who Make Magic!
Kelly Robertson
Special Education Teacher

Kelly Robertson has been a Special Education Teacher at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School and has been in her chosen profession for over 27 years! Everyone says she is a beacon of support and encouragement and creates opportunities for her students to engage with their community and discover unique talents. One of the standout features of Kelly's teaching philosophy is her commitment to community-based learning. She understands that real-world experiences are invaluable for her students' growth. She organizes community trips and allows her students to practice essential life skills in a supportive environment. These outings enhance their learning and foster a sense of belonging and connection to the community. Kelly also plays a pivotal role in the school community, taking on many different roles, including advising the Interact Club, heading up and organizing the district’s “Think Purple” week, and chaperoning various events. Outside of this, Kelly is also a union rep for aides and a member of the Safety Committee for our school. Last year, a student underwent a life-threatening transplant surgery, and Kelly took up a collection for this student and his family and drove into New York each weekend to visit the student at the hospital and check if he was mentally and physically in a good space. Students, fellow teachers and parents all say they can always count on Kelly for support and guidance. She is the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back if it meant helping someone in need. For all these reasons, Kelly Robertson is welcomed into the 2025 Class of Teachers Who Make Magic!
Mary Austin
2nd Grade Teacher
John F. Kennedy Primary School
Mary Austin has been a teacher for 20 years! Mary started at JFK as an Enrichment Teacher and implemented a program that encouraged students of all levels to ask more questions and in turn it fostered a love of learning, and from there, she transitioned to the technology teacher at JFK. Mary has excelled at every position she’s held at JFK. She’s always open to collaborating with others, making suggestions, and providing ideas for the team. Mary has experienced many academic hurdles over the years with students of all needs, but she’s never given up on any of them and has always wanted the result for her students to be successful. Many former students return to say “hello” and stay in touch with her. Mary takes time to explain all lessons, and in turn her students want to learn and take pride in their work. Outside the classroom, Mary works with the local community. For example, she helps with JFK’s summer program that delivers food and supplies to students and their families, and she’s usually loading up her car a few times a week and putting on her delivery hat and bringing the much-needed supplies to students and parents! Mary is also the school/PTO liaison and organizes fun PTO nights such as the "Monster Mash" Halloween Party, The Sweetheart Dance, Field Day, and many events to keep students engaged during the summer months. For all these reasons, and we’re sure there’s going to be more, we welcome Mary Austin into the 2025 Class of Teachers Who Make Magic!
Wendy Kolodziej
Head Custodian
Hillsborough Elementary School
Wendy is the Head Custodian at Hillsborough Elementary School and has been working in her chosen field for over 20 years! She has an exceptional work ethic, and she’s committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment for all who enter the building. Wendy’s influence transcends the typical duties of a custodian. Her responsiveness is legendary, and her proactive approach and unwavering support earned her the well-deserved title of “Support Person of the Year” in 2010, voted on by the very staff whose lives she enriched daily. Wendy possesses a rare gift for making everyone feel valued and appreciated, and her warmth and genuine care for students and staff create a positive effect throughout the school. Wendy’s story embodies the American Dream. She was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1994 with experience as a cook. She worked tirelessly in various roles, from housekeeping to factory work, before finding her place in Hillsborough. Even today, she supplements her income by cleaning houses, demonstrating her enduring dedication to her family. Since her husband’s passing in 2010, she’s supported her three children, working multiple jobs to ensure they had every opportunity to succeed. Her pride in their college graduations and gainful employment speaks volumes about her extraordinary resilience and boundless love. She is also a devoted grandmother. Wendy Kolodziej is far more than a custodian; she is a vital member of the Hillsborough educational community, a beacon of positivity, and a true inspiration. She exemplifies the dedication and selflessness that define the very best in the profession, and this is why she’s entering the 2025 Class of Teachers/ESP’s Who Make Magic!
Jillian Mahon
Physical Education Teacher
Kennedy Elementary School
Jillian exudes passion, creativity, and dedication to her students and the school community. As a Physical Education teacher, she goes beyond traditional teaching methods to create a fun, engaging, and inclusive environment where every student feels valued. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her presence is felt throughout the school from the moment students arrive until the end of the day. Each morning Jilliam greets students at the crosswalk, often dressed in a fun costume or proudly participating in a school spirit theme day. Her energy and positivity set the tone for the day, making Kennedy School a welcoming place where students and staff are excited to learn and grow.
Inside the gym, Phys Ed is transformed into an unforgettable experience. With music playing through the speakers and lessons tailored to student interests, Jilliam makes movement and fitness enjoyable for all grade levels. Known for designing innovative and engaging activities, she encourages teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
Beyond the classroom, Jillian plays a vital role in organizing schoolwide events that bring the community together. She leads multiple fundraisers, including the Homerun Derby and Talent Show, which support school initiatives while giving students exciting opportunities to showcase their talents. Additionally, she plans the annual themed Field Day, an event that students eagerly anticipate each year. Through these efforts, Jillian builds school spirit and creates lasting memories, making Kennedy School a truly special place. Monica Neves
4th Grade Special Education Teacher
South River Elementary School
Monica Neves is a 4th Grade Special Education Teacher at South River Elementary School and anyone who meets her says she connects with students in a way that inspires confidence and a love for learning. Her teaching goes beyond textbooks, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and personal growth.
Monica recognizes each student’s unique strengths and challenges, ensuring they feel valued and supported. She tailors her lessons to engage diverse learning styles, using hands-on activities, technology, and storytelling to make content accessible and enjoyable. Her ability to transform lessons into memorable experiences ignites enthusiasm in her students.
Beyond academics, Monica is a mentor and role model, instilling confidence and resilience. She nurtures a culture of respect, kindness, and perseverance, always providing extra support and encouragement to help students thrive. Her impact extends to new educators, whom she mentors with patience and wisdom. Fontella Best
Kindergarten Teacher
Conerly Road School
Fontella Best has been teaching Kindergarten for over 22 years and is currently working for Conerly Road School, providing support and tools for her students to become lifelong learners. She heads up many school events and volunteers to help after the school day is over.
Fontella is a member of the School Improvement Panel (ScIP) which supports teacher evaluations, mentoring, and professional development, and she continues to enhance her own knowledge by collaborating with colleagues and attending professional development conventions
Fontella is also a district and building leader and serves in many roles such as the elementary coordinator, building representative and is on the negotiations committee. On the county and statewide level, she is a member of the Certification, Evaluation, and Tenure Committee as well!
Fontella Best provides guidance, life skills and educational enhancement and says she will always be an advocate for her students. This is why she’s now a member of the 2025 Class of Teachers Who Make Magic!
Wendy Pierre
English Teacher
North Brunswick Township High School
Wendy Pierre has been an educator for over 15 years and currently teaches English at North Brunswick Township High School. Staff and colleagues agree she’s an inspiration and exudes dedication, passion, and unwavering support for her students.
As the advisor for the Black Cultural Alliance, Wendy fosters a safe, inclusive space where students can celebrate their culture, explore their identities, and find their voices. Her leadership in this role has transformed the organization into a vibrant, impactful community that brings people together and promotes understanding.
Inside the classroom, Wendy's love for literature is infectious. Her lessons are not just about teaching English, they’re about teaching life. Whether she’s guiding students through the works of Toni Morrison or helping them refine their own voices in writing, she inspires creativity, critical thinking, and confidence.
Her colleagues admire her boundless energy, kindness, and dedication. No matter how busy she is, Wendy is always willing to lend a helping hand, share a laugh, or mentor someone in need. Her ability to connect with students and staff alike has made her an invaluable part of the school community.

Dawn Eelman is a Homeroom Teacher at Whiton Elementary School in Branchburg and has been in her chosen profession for over 25 years!
Dawn is a dedicated team player and fixture of the school community and goes above and beyond to support all students and staff. Her unwavering commitment to her students is evident not only in the classroom but also beyond the school day. She arrives early and stays late, ensuring she is fully prepared to meet her students' needs and provide the support necessary for their success. Her dedication to their academic and personal growth creates an environment where all students thrive. She possesses a remarkable ability to connect with both students and their families, and maintains regular and frequent communication with parents, keeping them informed and involved in their child’s progress.
Dawn also excels in classroom management, creating a positive and nurturing environment where students feel safe, supported, and valued. She works closely with students to foster their social and emotional growth, teaching them not only academic content but also important life skills. Her classroom is a place where respect, empathy, and collaboration are consistently promoted, helping students develop into responsible and compassionate individuals.

Anthony Lowenberg has been an English teacher in Dunellen for 14 years. He has demonstrated himself to be a dedicated, hard-working professional. Every high school student must complete his class to graduate, so Anthony makes connections with his students and builds relationships. Teaching isn’t just a job for him, it’s a passion. He doesn’t just hand out a grade and moves on, he invests time and energy into every student and shows he cares about their success. He’s stayed in contact with many students post High School Graduation and is always willing to provide advice and support through their college years, helping them navigate their way to adulthood.
It's hard to put into words the educational environment Anthony created in his classroom. The walls are covered with student work, posters, and influential people. Every space on the walls is covered and has a purpose. The classroom has been set up for scholarly pursuits and student interaction to review, revise, and publish the best work possible.
Anthony challenges the strongest of students and provides extra support to those who struggle. While every student may not appreciate his efforts at the time, they become better students, people, and writers. Anthony has taken many colleagues under his wing in a professional manner to help them develop their teaching skills and foster student interaction. Kathi Schunk works as a Mathematics Instructional Support Teacher at Stony Brook School in Branchburg and has been in her chosen profession for over 16 years! She’s an educator that develops strong relationships with students and gets to know them personally so she can use that information to help them succeed.
Kathi works to find ways to actively engage students by using models and hands-on activities, and as a result, her students feel their confidence soar and they’re fully engaged in learning.
Kathi seeks out new and innovative ways to reach students when they’re struggling and is a collaborative member of the Stony Brook School, always willing to jump in and help wherever she can. She demonstrates flexibility and keeps her students’ needs at the forefront of everything she does.
Every day you’ll find her with a smile and a wave, welcoming students to school each day, and she’s always up for spirit days or a great Halloween costume to show students that adults can have fun too!
