Scarlet Knights Open Season at 3-0 For First Time in Four Seasons

Destiny Adams turned in another historic performance as Rutgers took down NJIT 94-84 on Sunday afternoon to send the Women's Basketball team to a 3-0 start to the 2024-25 season. It is the first 3-0 start for for women's team since the 2019-20 season.

Adams powered the Scarlet Knights, scoring 36 points with 22 rebounds, the highest double-double for Rutgers since it became a member of the Big Ten.

How big was Destiny's night? Well, according to Rutgers Athletics, "Her 36 points tied a Jersey Mike's Arena record that was previously set by 2024 Olympian Arella Guirantes in 2020. She is also tied for 8th all-time for most points in a single game along with Guirantes and Caroline DeRoose who netted 36 in 1994."

"I like Destiny," Coach Coquese Washington said with a grin after the contest. "She plays so hard and that's one of the things that makes her hard to stop or guard. She's relentless. She's having fun out there, and she's just a joy to coach, for how hard she plays and how much she gives of herself every time she steps on the floor."

Meanwhile Freshman guard Kiyomi McMiller enjoyed a breakout game of her own, scoring 25 points on 11-of-22 shooting. She played a huge role in the second half, nailing jumpers and three-pointers as Rutgers built its largest lead to 15 points midway through the fourth quarter.

"Feels great," McMiller said of finally getting back onto the floor after missing the start of the season. "I'm just focused on the next one."

"I think it was our focus at the half to defend better. We know we are capable of scoring, so once we tried to prevent them from shooting three that's what happened," Adams said after the contest.
