Rutgers Women’s Hoops Off to Flying Start
Rutgers women’s basketball is off to a flying start to the 2024-25 campaign, following an 85-79 victory on Monday night against Manhattan.
Leading the way for the Scarlet Knights was center Chyna Cornwell, who notched her 13th career double-double with 21 points and 15 boards to pace the Scarlet Knights to victory.
In fact four Rutgers players found themselves in double-figures by nights end. JoJo Lacey and Destiny Adams each had 14 points a piece, while freshman Zachara Perkins dished out 11 points in her Rutgers debut.
“We are still rounding into form in the first game, but certainly a positive is we were able to score some points,” third year Head coach Coquese Washington said. “They don’t always have to be pretty or flawless. We will look at the positives from this before we play Cornell on Thursday.”
Rutgers led pretty much from pillar to post on Monday night, building an 11-point lead after the third quarter on a three by Mya Petticord.
The Scarlet Knights were able to push that lead to 14-points midway through the fourth quarter on a three-ball by JoJo Lacey.
Injuries:
Kiyomi McMiller left the game with an eye injury and was not cleared to come back in the game. McMiller had four quick points in four minutes on the court in the opening part of the game.
Rutgers (1-0) will host Cornell on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they look to start a season at 2-0 for the second consecutive season.
