The Juan Soto Show has taken over New York. And come Friday, the Show will make its Broadway debut when the New York Yankees return to Yankee Stadium for the home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Until then, Yankees fans are basking in the glow of a 4-0 start to the 2024 season. Juan Soto has grabbed the proverbial bull by the horns in his first series as a Yankee, batting .556 with four RBI, a homer and one huge clutch throw to home plate that prevented the tying run from scoring.
Not to mention Soto’s hits have seemingly all come in clutch moments. None bigger than his RBI single to left that gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead on Sunday afternoon. They would win by that score.
But it’s more than just the statistics. It’s the attitude. When Soto steps into the box and takes a pitch he will shake his head in affirmation of what just sped by him as if to say to the pitcher, ‘Going with the off-speed? Nice. Ok, I’ll sit on that.’
And when he homered on Saturday night to break a three-all tie, Soto rounded the bases pounding his chest, then lept into the air at third base to greet Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas before heading home.
Some would call this showboating, which it is in a way. Others would call it confidence. Whatever you call it, Juan Soto is having an affect on this team. Even third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, who is off to a sizzling start himself, credits Soto’s approach in batting practice toward helping him out.
While it is early in the season, there is just a different vibe with these Yankees. 4-0 is impressive. But doing so against a team that been the Yankees tormentor the past seven years like the Houston Astros is another level of impressive.
The New York Yankees have one more road trip to tackle before heading home. They head to Arizona to face the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. They are hot too, off to a 3-1 start after taking out the Colorado Rockies over the weekend.
If the Yankees have one issue after their sweep of Houston, it is their starting pitching is still a question mark. But as long as Juan Soto keeps swinging a flaming hot bat, and continues to inspire a roster chuck full of current and future All-Stars, the Yankees will become must see TV.
