Giants Bungle Opportunities Against Bengals
The New York Giants once again couldn’t muster much offense in front of the home crowd, losing to the Cincinnati Bengals 17-7 on Sunday night, dropping to 2-4 on the season. New York is an inexplicable 0-3 at home this year; one of seven teams with the distinction in 2024.
While the Giants won the time of possession battle (nearly 36 minutes to the Bengals 24 minutes) and held Cincy to 13 first downs, the Bengals made enough big plays when it counted.
Of the five possessions the Giants had that they worked deep into Cincinnati territory, only once did they come away with points, a Tyrone Tracy Jr. one-yard plunge into the end zone that tied the game at seven in the second quarter.
The other four possessions ended in the following order: interception of Daniel Jones; two missed field goals, and a turnover on downs.
“We didn’t score enough points offensively and it starts with me,” coach Brian Daboll said. “It’s hard to win games when you score seven points, and that’s the reality of it.”
On the flip side, the Giants’ defense did a spectacular job against Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ offense. They sacked Burrow four times and held both Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase under 100 yards receiving.
The Bengals only touchdowns bookended what was a defensive slugfest. Burrow had a nifty 47-yard run down the sideline, seemingly untouched until he dove for the pylon for the opening score.
Much later, in the fourth quarter, running back Chase Brown broke containment and dashed 30-yards to paydirt to put Cincy up 17-7.
NEXT: The Giants (2-4) face a very bizarre Philadelphia Eagles team on Sunday. The Eagles might be 4-2, but they struggled to beat the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, and Head Coach Nick Sirianni was seen yelling at Eagles fans before the game ended. Considering how close the Giants have played games this season, this could be an upset alert.
