New York Jets Defense a No-Show In Rodgers Return
Well, at least Aaron Rodgers completed a game this time in Jets green and white.
That is about the only silver lining for New York Jets fans following a humbling 32-19 loss to the reigning NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers on the opening Monday Night game of the season. While Rodgers came out healthy and was pretty solid overall, the Jets’ defense was missing in action for virtually the entire night.
The Niners ripped up 401 yards of offense on 70 plays and held the football for over 39 minutes as they pounded the Jets front seven all night.
And this was a 49ers team that was playing without All-Star running back Christian McCaffery who was a late scratch because of a calf and Achilles injury. Instead, The Niners opted to go with little-known veteran running back Jordan Mason, who looked like Marshawn Lynch in his prime as he pulverized the New York Jets for 147 yards on the ground.
Give a lot of credit to the 49ers offensive line, they dominated the line of scrimmage against the Jets who clearly missed having former mates John Franklin Myers (traded to Denver) and Bryce Huff (free agent to Philly).
As for the Jets pass rush? There was none. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy enjoyed a comfortable pocket all night, as he found open guys all over the field. Overall he completed 19 passes for 231 yards.
Perhaps this will escalate the need to open talks between the Jets and holdout Haason Reddick. Reddick is one of the most feared pass rushers in the game. He wants to be paid as such, and both sides have been stuck in a stalemate on a deal since April.
Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers was pretty solid in his first full game back since tearing his Achilles last year. The four-time MVP threw for 167 yards with a touchdown and an interception. When he had time, Rodgers was zipping the ball around the ballpark and hit his receivers in tight windows.
His touchdown pass to Allen Lazard was vintage Rodgers as he got the Niners to jump off-sides before hitting Lazard in stride for six.
The Jets (0-1) visit the Tennessee Titans (0-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Let’s just say it’s a must-win scenario for Gang Green, and a much-needed opportunity for redemption for the defensive unit.
