Haason Reddick Demands Trade from Jets
Haason Reddick, we hardly knew ye?
After an extensive hold out that has dragged deep into training camp, defensive end Haason Reddick has demanded a trade from the New York Jets, the team that acquired him in the off-season, according to multiple reports.
The news comes as the two sides have been stuck in neutral on a contract extension. However when the Jets acquired the two-time Pro Bowler, in March for a conditional 2026 third round pick from the Eagles, they were open to giving Reddick — who was set to make $14.25 million — a contract extension.
Before completing a trade with Philadelphia, SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that Gang Green offered Reddick an extension, but Reddick declined the offer.
“The Jets were open to a contract extension making Reddick one of the league’s highest-paid edge rushers (he wants a deal between $25 million and $28 million annually), but there was an understanding between the Jets and Reddick that in order to receive that, Reddick needed to show up and perform on the field,” Hughes reported back in July.
To date, Reddick has yet to show up. He did not report to mandatory mini-camp in June, and has not reported to training camp.
He has been fined a substantial amount of $550,000 each day he misses.
Meanwhile the Jets have been steadfast in their position that they will not trade or release the disgruntled player. This hurts the Jets badly, because they saw Bryce Huff leave for Philadelphia via free agency, signing a three-year $51.1 million deal with them. New York then traded defensive end John Franklin-Meyers to Denver in exchange for a sixth round pick in order to make room financially for Reddick.
Will the Jets ultimately trade Reddick again? And if they do what will they get back for him? Surely no team will be willing to recoup the Jets a third round pick. And if Reddick never shows up and sits out the 2024 season, the Jets need second year player Will McDonald IV to step up in a big way.
