WCTC Remembers Tommy Gordon, Former host of Afternoon drive on the Voice of Central Jersey
On Monday evening, “the commissioner” Tommy Gordon, as he was known to many on the airwaves passed away.
He will always etch in NY/NJ radio and especially on WCTC-AM when he was the voice of Central Jersey as the PM host for over 12 years.
WCTC 1450, was his home from 2010- 2022. But he did not stop there, after leaving WCTC he then started his in-house streaming company, and his views continue for so many in NJ to enjoy right up to his last broadcast last week.
Our Memories of Tommy Gordon
WCTC staff member and Production Director Ginny Otte has fond memories of Tommy and had this to say about him.
“Tommy G was a sweet, gregarious man who always had a smile and a kind word of encouragement. He genuinely wanted to know how you felt and how you were doing. He would call me for my take on current events and news items, introducing me to his listeners by saying they were about to enter “Ginny’s World;” including me in his show on those occasions. He always had other people in mind, and he did what many of us only hope for; he left this world better than he found it. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by everyone who knew him.”
Podcast Host Joey Bloch has these memories of him.
“Tommy G was one of the greats of New Jersey/ New York radio but you would never know it by the way he treated people. Tommy was the kind of guy who wanted to know everybody’s name in the room from an intern all the way to the top manager at the station. He was the type of person who instantly gravitated towards you.
This was true for me when I first met him during a live broadcast we did at the Raritan Yacht Club in Perth Amboy as part of the city’s July 4th Fireworks celebration. I had only been interning at the station for less than 2 months but that did not stop Tommy from seeking me out, asking where I went to school and telling the story of how he got his start on radio.
He even gave me a shout-out during the live broadcast. Our working relationship continued like that for a number of years, and it intensified even further when I got my own radio show, “In the Middle”. When I made the announcement about “In the Middle”, Tommy instantly invited me to his show the day before the first episode. As they say, the rest was history.
Tommy continued to have me on his show every Friday to discuss “In the Middle”, current events or just life in general. We had a ton of laughs on and off the air together which I will forever cherish. Tommy gave me so much advice and offered me several tips on how to further my career which led me to where I am today.
I will never forget when he invited my mom and I to his studio for an in-person interview. He even had my mom on the air with me. Many radio hosts would not do that, but Tommy did because he was the kind of guy who valued family and was always interested in getting into the weeds about the life of every guest on the
Tommy G Show. Tommy G will truly be missed but leaves behind a legacy that young guys like myself can only dream of following.”
My personal memories of Tommy were of an unmatched talent and someone who was so down to earth and a definite family man, who had the unique talent to both inform and entertain the listeners on so many topics and was so well versed in all of them.
From the entire staff of 1450 WCTC-Am in New Brunswick to his family, may the good lord watch over him and watch over his family.
