New York Jets Fan Delivered Winning Sandwich to Land Mike Williams
The New York Jets signed free agent wide receiver Mike Williams to a one-year, $15 million contract on Tuesday, and they have a local fan to thank in part.
On X, a user by the name of @NYJ_Matt posted that he personally delivered a Taylor ham and cheese sandwich to the New York Jets facility in Florham Park, with the hopes that it would help land Williams, a coveted 6-foot-4 wide receiver.
Well, whether it was whatever General Manager Joe Douglas and Head Coach Robert Saleh sold to Williams, or maybe it was the sandwich itself, it worked.
Soon after signing his contract, the Jets presented Williams with the sandwich. And he chowed down!
We cannot confirm we know who @NYJ_Matt is, but one thing is for sure he has now become a mini-celebrity. Even Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner shouted out to the mystery fan on Twitter.
Even T-shirts are getting made. We kid you not.
The Jets even made the bitten into sandwich their new social media profile photo.
Williams is certainly a talent. According to Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Williams had only one dropped pass in 23 games and one drop in 160 targets. The guy has Velcro for hands; he always makes the tough catches in tight windows.
His best season came in 2021 when he hauled in nine touchdowns and amassed nearly 1,200 yards. However, injuries have been a major issue the past couple of seasons. Last year he missed most of the season after tearing his ACL in Week 3 with the LA Chargers.
The injuries make Williams a gamble, but it is one the Jets are willing to roll the dice on.
Are the Jets done?
Not quite. Pro Bowl defensive end Jadevon Clowney is expected to visit the Jets on Wednesday. Anybody got a sandwich to send to Florham Park? How about a slice of New York-style pizza?
