On a glorious Father’s Day in Bridgewater, the Somerset Patriots were led by two pitchers, one named Hampton, the other Hamilton, in a 4-3 win for the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate over the Pittsburgh Pirates Double-A affiliate, the Atloona Curve. The Somerset Patriots are now winners of nine of its last 10 games.
Chase Hampton made his Double-A debut with Somerset on Sunday afternoon. He was excellent, giving up three-runs, two-earned, over six innings of work. He walked none and struck out eight. At one point Hampton held Altonna to a single run over five innings, and limited the Curve to just one hit over a four inning span.
Ranked 24th in the Yankees farm system, Hampton is a player the Yankees like a lot, drawing comparisons by mlb.com to Ken Waldichuk, Hayden Wesneski, Will Warren, and Richard Fitts. That’s really good company.
Hampton started the season in High-A Hudson Valley where he pitched to a 2.68 ERA in nine starts.
As for Ian Hamilton. He was credited with the win Sunday for the Patriots. The 28-year old Hamilton is rehabbing from an injury that has kept him out of the Yankees bullpen since mid-May. The Yankees, who have one of baseball’s best bullpen’s, would love to get Hamilton back in the fold.
He tossed a clean inning in relief in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom half of that inning, Trey Sweeney connected on a two-run homer that proved to be the game winner.
The Patriots (39-23) are off Monday, but back in action on Tuesday with Carlos Rodon making his highly anticipated rehab outing in Somerset against New Hampshire.
