Gerrit Cole to Make Rehab Start in Somerset Tuesday
Gerrit Cole is coming to Somerset!
Gerrit Cole To The Patriots
The Yankees ace who has been out for the entire regular season thus far will make his season debut, and return to the mound in Somerset with the Yankees double-A affiliate, Somerset Patriots.
Cole’s rehab outing in Somerset will take place in earnest, on Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark against the Hartford Yardgoats. The first pitch will be just after 6:35 p.m.
The Yankees placed Cole on the injured list on March 28 with right elbow inflammation. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner dominated in 2023, finishing with a 15-4 record, 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts over 209 innings in 33 starts. He became the sixth Yankee in history to win the Cy Young Award, which includes Patriots Manager Emeritus Sparky Lyle (1977).
Cole who owns 145 wins in his professional career, hasn’t pitched in a minor league ballpark since 2016 when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yankees Without Cole?
Despite not having Gerrit Cole in their rotation, the Yankees own the best record in Major League Baseball with a record of 42-19, having just swept away the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.
The Yankees lead all of Major League Baseball in team ERA at 2.78, and have held opponents to a .210 batting average.
Carols Rodon (7-1, 3.09 ERA) and Luis Gil (7-1, 1.99) have both been outstanding this year in the middle of this Yankees rotation, with Rodon bouncing back incredibly well from last season’s injury-riddled 2023 campaign.
With Cole on return, it’s equal to the Yankees acquiring a top-flight starter at the deadline. In short: it’s huge!
BIG Crowd:
The Patriots, who enjoyed a crowd of over 7,000 patrons on Saturday for the first-ever Sopranos night, figure to have a huge gathering of fans on Tuesday when Gerrit Cole toes the rubber.
Fox Sports Radio New Jersey will have live coverage of Cole’s rehab start in Somerset at 6:15 with pregame.
