Somerset Patriots Enter Weekend In Drivers Seat for Playoffs
The Somerset Patriots enter the weekend with a half-game lead over the Portland SeaDogs for the final playoff spot in the Double-A Eastern League. After winning the opening two games of their series with New Hampshire, the Patriots lost to the Fisher Cats 5-3 on Thursday night.
Yet, it didn’t hurt them as the SeaDogs continued to struggle against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Portland was shut out on Thursday night 9-0.
As for Somerset, Ben Shields was the star of the show on Thursday. The lefty struck out a career-best 10 batters over 4.2 innings pitched and gave up only a run on three hits.
Meanwhile, Grant Richardson remains a force with the bat. The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. It was his 32nd multi-hit game of the season. Over his last 10 games, Richardson is 11-for-36 (.303) with three RBI and six runs scored.
The Next Three Days
It will be fascinating to see how the next three days play out for the Somerset Patriots. If Somerset can win at least two of the next three, they will be in prime position to take the final playoff spot by at least a half-game, that is if Portland does not go on a three-game winning streak of course.
If Somerset goes into the final day of the regular season with a half-game lead still intact, they will need to either win on Sunday or get a loss by Portland to clinch a playoff spot.
Should Somerset find itself down a half-game going into the final day, they would need to beat New Hampshire and hope that Binghamton can top Portland.
The fun begins Friday night when the Patriots send Zach Messinger (6-8, 3.19 ERA) to the mound. Messinger is 4-0 with a 1.49 ERA in his last six starts dating back to the start of August.
