Princeton’s Women’s Basketball Season Ends in Loss to Indiana
INDIANA 56 – PRINCETON 55
Princeton came up just shy of advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever in the Women’s NCAA Tournament, as the women dropped a 56-55 decision to Indiana on Monday night.
Trailing 49-42 with 7:42 to go in the ball game, the Tigers rallied with an 8-0 run to take a 50-49 lead with 5:21 to go. Abby Meyers hit a pair of jump shots, while Kaitlyn Chen nailed a couple of free throws, and Ellie Mitchell capped off the run with a layup to put Princeton in front. After Indiana regained the lead on Nicole Cardano-Hillary’s layup, Princeton would find a way in the final minute to take a brief 52-51 lead when Chen connected on two more free throws.
Princeton was 60 seconds from the Sweet 16 until Indiana’s Grace Berger, who led the game in scoring with 15 points, hit a free throw to tie it at 52, and after a missed three-pointer by Abby Meyers, put Indiana out front for good with a layup with 31 seconds to go.
Indiana will face UConn in the Sweet 16 on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Princeton finishes a season of immense accomplishment at 25-5 with a Ivy League Tournament Title and an NCAA tournament victory under their belts. Four players finished in double figures for the Tigers including: Chen, who finished with 10 points; Meyers who had 11 points; Julia Cunningham and Grace Stone both finished with 13 points in the effort.
