Rutgers Women’s Basketball Drops 10th in a Row in Close Loss to Ohio State
OHIO STATE 61 – RUTGERS 57
A scrappy, hard fought performance that saw the Scarlet Knights pull to within one point with 44 seconds left, proved to be not enough, as Ohio State held on for a 61-57 victory. The loss drops Rutgers women’s basketball to 7-17 on the year and 0-12 in the Big Ten Conference. Rutgers is also 0-8 on the road so far this season. Five of those 10 losses have been by five points or less.
“Anytime you try to dig out of a hwole, you have doubts in your mind. These kids are fighting and continue to get better. They show you they are trying to get better. If they keep fighting this way we have a chance to be good down the stretch,” Acting Head Coach Timothy Eatman said after the game.
Rutgers exploded offensively in the second quarter, outscoring the Buckeyes 24-10, to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
Sayawni Lassiter nailed two of her five three-pointers of the game, in that second quarter surge. Lassiter finished with 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting. She was 5-of-8 from down town.
With 6:11 to go in the game, Rutgers took a slim one-point lead, 51-50 on Osh Brown’s layup. However, Ohio State responded with a 7-0 run to take a 57-51 lead with 3:37 to go. Rutgers did mount a comeback, with Brown hitting a layup and Lassiter nailing another three to bring Rutgers to within one point, 57-56 with 44 seconds left. Unfortunately for Rutgers, Ohio State cashed in on its foul shots in the wanning seconds to seal the victory.
Rutgers will host Penn State on Sunday, February 13 at 2 p.m.
