Last Place Yankees Keep Struggling as Ohtani Goes Boom
Yankees fans would like to see Angels Superstar Shohei Ohtani one day wear the pinstripes. That could happen as soon as the August 1 trade deadline, although unlikely considering the number of top level prospects the Yankees would need to give up in order to get arguably baseball’s most gifted athlete.
Until Ohtani’s future becomes more clear, Yankees fans watched him launch a two-run homer to left-center field that tied the ballgame at three a piece in the seventh inning of last night’s 4-3 extra inning Angels victory. The bomb was a no-doubter off the bat, Ohtani’s league leading 35th homer of the season. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate, raising his batting average to .306. When pressed about the Ohtani at bat, Manager Aaron Boone said he didn’t consider walking him in that situation.

Whether Ohtani is traded at the deadline, or stays in Anaheim and ultimately tests free agency come this winter, he is going to be the most coveted player in baseball in quiet some time. In the meantime all the Yankees can do is shake their collective heads as Monday night produced another loss, the third in the last four games since the All-Star Break.
After Ohtani tied things in the seventh inning, Michael Stefanic won it with a RBI single in the tenth inning to drive in the lead runner from second base.
Offensive Woes:
The Yankees, whose offense has been sputtering for the past month, struggled again with runners in scoring position, posting a 1-for-9 night with runners in scoring position.
Really only Oswald Cabrera enjoyed a big night for the Yankees, driving in a pair of runs on a ground rule double in the sixth inning.
The loss spoiled what was a great outing for starter Luis Severino, who held the Angels to a run on six hits over six innings of work.

The loss drops the Yankees to 50-45 on the season. They are now dead-last in the AL East, a game behind the Boston Red Sox; the first time since 1992 that the Yankees have been in last this late into a season. They are also 2.5 games out of the wild card with Baltimore, Toronto and Houston leading the pack.
