New York Rangers Face Elimination Game on Saturday
The New York Rangers are on the ropes. If this is a repeat of 1994, then Chris Kreider or someone needs to pull a Mark Messier, or more importantly, the Broadway Blue Shirts must find a way to win the next two games of this best-of-seven series against the Florida Panthers to keep the dream alive.
The Rangers fell to the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Thursday night in Game 5 at Madison Square Garden. They now trail the series three games to two.
The scene now shifts to South Beach where the Panthers have the opportunity to eliminate the Rangers in Game 6 on Saturday night.
The Rangers enjoyed only a brief lead in the second period, but it was all Florida the rest of the way, as the Panthers scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead. Sam Bennett’s empty netter with less than two minutes to go in regulation, sealed the deal.
The Rangers did give Panthers fans a bit of a scare when Alexis Lafreniere scored inside a minute to go, but it was too little too late.
Can Rangers Duplicate 1994?
Is this 1994 all over again? Rangers fans have been smitten with the belief that this will be a repeat of that famed season. In fact, those ’94 Rangers were also facing elimination in Game 6 against the New Jersey Devils.
Of course that Rangers team stormed back to shock the Devils in Game 6, and won the series on Stephon Matteau’s game winning goal in Game 7. The Rangers would win the Cup against Vancouver.
We’ll find out if Rangers fans wishes come true this weekend.
