Women’s Hoops Back on Track with Dominant Effort Over St. Francis
It was a coming out party for two of the newest members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Led by freshman Lisa Thompson’s 16 points, and 15 points from freshman Jillian Huerter, Rutgers dominated St. Francis 80-51, Saturday to improve to 3-2 on the season. The victory snaps a two game losing streak for Rutgers.
“They both have ability to knock down the long ball. They are getting adjusted to Division I college basketball. I am glad they had break out games today,” Head Coach Coquese Washington said after the contest.
“We can be better. That is the task today to get a little bit better in our ball security, and that is pursuit.”
Rutgers got 37 points off the bench on Saturday, with 31 of those points coming from Thompson and Huerter.
The Scarlet Knights shot 48 percent from downtown with Huerter hitting the most trays with five three-pointers.
“It’s great! We need them to play with that kind of happiness and energy. They bring a different element with their shooting ability,” Washington added.
Huerter’s first three of the day put Rutgers up 7-5 in the opening quarter, and they wouldn’t look back. Chyna Cornwell connected on a bucket and Lisa Thompson hit a three to push RU up 12-5. Before long Rutgers was pouring it on, leading 24-5 before St. Francis connected on a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter.
Cornwell and Destiny Adams each finished with 11 points, and Kaylene Smikle finished with nine points for Rutgers.

Rutgers has a quick turnaround and will host Fairfield on Monday, before hosting Texas Tech the day after Thanksgiving.
