Rutgers Soccer Falls to Penn State in Big Ten Quarters
An early hole proved to be too much for Rutgers, as the men’s soccer team fell to the Penn State Nittnay Lions 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, ending dreams of a Big Ten title repeat.
After nearly 42 minutes of scoreless soccer to open the game, Penn State finally struck when Mohamed Cisset nailed a header into the goal just before halftime to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
The scoring opened up in the second half. First Penn State’s Peter Mangione delivered a right footed kick into the back of the net to put the Lions up 2-0 in the 54th minute. Twenty minutes later, Van Danielson went one-on-one with Rutgers goalie Ciaran Dalton, who left the net to try to defend against Danielson.
Danielson slapped it home passed a diving Rutgers goaltender.
Rutgers finally got on the scoreboard in the 88th minute when Nick Collins connected on a header to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Rutgers is 5-8-3 on the season.
