New York Jets Season On Thin Ice After Pittsburgh Meltdown
The New York Jets season is starting to slip away as Gang Green was totally outclassed by the Pittsburgh Steelers 37-15 on Sunday Night Football. New York now drops to abysmal 2-5 record, the same record as their MetLife Stadium co-tenants the New York Giants.
The difference between the two being the Giants entered the year with very little expectations. Many had the Jets pegged for the playoffs, if not the Super Bowl.
With the Pittsburgh Steelers offense reeling, and quarterback Russell Wilson looking as rusty as ever, the Jets built a 15-6 lead in the second quarter, and quickly squandered that lead on mistakes and turnovers.
In fact, just the fact that the Jets even had that nine-point lead was a miracle in of itself. Aaron Rodgers hit tight end Tyler Conklin for a one-yard touchdown that almost was nullified by the Jets themselves, when Interim Head Coach Jeff Ulbrich tried to throw a challenge flag onto the field for the play before when it appeared that Breece Hall got into the end zone.
Fortunately for New York, nobody saw the flag, and the Rodgers touchdown pass stood.
The Jets luck ended there.
Rodgers became a turnover machine. His first pick to Beanie Bishop set up a Steelers touchdown to cut the deficit to 15-13 at the break.
Later, with the Jets trailing Pittsburgh by one-point, Rodgers had Garrett Wilson wide open down the sideline but Wilson couldn’t corral the ball, it bounced off his chest and into the hands of Bishop, who nearly brought the ball back for a touchdown.
Pittsburgh eventually scored on Russell Wilson’s one-yard plunge to make it 23-15. At that point one could turn out the lights. Game over.
Once again, Aaron Rodgers and crew spoke of accountability in postgame, a theme that has become too much this season.
Where will this Jets season go next? Who knows, but it doesn’t look good.
