Rutgers Earns First Big Ten Victory of Season Over Indiana
Rutgers earned its first Big Ten victory of the year with a 66-57 victory over Indiana at Jersey Mike’s Arena on Tuesday.
Mawot Mag led the way with 13 points, as five Rutgers players finished the night with double-figures. Senior Clifford Omoruyi led Rutgers with 11 rebounds.
“That was a great win,” Head Coach Steve Pikiell said. “Playing in this league was tough and we tend to go on winning and losing streaks. We played Illinois who was ranked seventh and we went on the road against Ohio State. We’re getting healthy and really figuring everything out. It was really great to be at home too. This team has a ton of size and ability to be on draft boards. Now we head to Michigan State, one of the toughest places to play. We have a lot of season left.”
In a game that was a tight contest for much of the night, Rutgers led by only one-point, 39-38 with 11:41 to go in the game, turned on a dime thanks to a 12-0 run over a period of five minutes.
A jumper by Austin Williams and a three-ball by Aundre Hyatt propelled Rutgers to a 45-38 lead. Williams added two more jump shots during the scoring run, with Mawot Mag capping off the rally with a slam dunk to give RU a 13-point edge.
While Mag led the way with 13-points, Hyatt was right behind him with 12 points. Williams, Derek Simpson and Jamichael Davis each contributed 10 points a piece in the victory.
Rutgers (9-6, 1-3) heads to Michigan State on Saturday to take on the Spartans. The two teams split a pair of meetings last year with Rutgers beating the Spartans at Madison Square Garden last February.
