BREAKING: Dan Hurley Chooses to Stay at UCONN Over Lakers
Dan Hurley is staying local!
The two-time National Championship Head Coach of the University of Connecticut Huskies, Hurley will stay in Storrs, Connecticut after rejecting a lucrative offer by the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Hurley declined a six-year $70 million deal from the Lakers that would have put him among the top-six highest-paid coaches in the NBA. Instead, Hurley will stay with UCONN, and reports indicate that he and the Huskies are working on a long-term extension to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college hoops.
The choice to stay in Connecticut where he is 68-11 and won two national titles the past two seasons, with a solid chance at a three-peat, was too much to give up for Hurley.
“Hurley told Wojnarowski on Sunday that the Lakers made a ‘compelling case’ and presented a ‘compelling vision’ for him to become their next coach but that he loves what he has built with the two-time defending national champion Huskies,” (ESPN).
Instead, the Lakers who are moving forward with a 40-year-old LeBron James, and a team in need of retooling will look in another direction. Many expect current ABC/ESPN analyst J.J. Redick to get heavy consideration for the post.
As for Hurley, he gets to stay close to his Jersey routes. Born and bred in Jersey City, New Jersey, Dan Hurley gained his passion for hoops through his father, Bob Hurley Sr., a Hall of Fame coach in his own right after decades of storied success at St. Anthony.
Just this weekend Hurley was spotted at a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden wearing a ‘New York New York’ t-shirt, with many suspecting that it was a sign the championship-winning head coach wasn’t going anywhere.
Had Hurley taken the Lakers job it almost certainly would have led to a widespread shake-up in college hoops, especially in the era of the NIL.
