Whatever It Takes, Sign Soto: But Will Yankees Do It If They Win The World Series This Year?
The Yankees have gotten off to an unbelievable start this season after trading for Juan Soto this past off-season. Last year the Yankees finished 82-80 and looked like a lifeless, horrible baseball team, it was evident change was needed. General Manager, Brian Cashman and Yankees Head Coach, Aaron Boone were put on notice at the beginning of last off-season with owner Hal Steinbrenner extremely upset with the team’s performance during the year. “The fans didn’t get anywhere close to what they deserve. We are going to do everything we can to right the ship for 2024.” Steinbrenner said.
Did Hal mean for just 2024? Or are the Yankees looking to create another dynasty, like the Yankees teams from the late 1990s, and early 2000s? Steinbrenner made Yankee fans wonder if he is serious about winning multiple championships when he stated his concerns with where the team stands financially. “I’m going to be honest, payrolls at the levels we are at right now are simply not sustainable for us,” Steinbrenner said in a recent statement.
With Soto being a free agent at the end of the season, and knowing what he is going to demand in an open market, are the Yankees going to be serious about resigning him if they can win the World Series this year, and should they?
The Yankees currently have a great nucleus of young players, and if they can resign their 25-year-old superstar the Yankees will have their leadoff hitter Anthony Volpe (23) and their number two hitter, superstar Juan Soto (25) potentially for the next decade. Having these two guys at the top of the order, signed, and performing at an all-star level before they even reach their prime, can set the Yankees up to start a dynasty and capitalize on the final stretch of Aaron Judge’s prime years.
Considering what it took the Yankees to get Soto, and how much the fan base has fallen in love with him, it would be a monumental mistake for the Yankees to not do whatever it takes to sign Soto. Regardless of whether the Yankees win the World Series or if they are a first-round exit, Soto must be a Yankee for the next 10 years. You have a chance to lock in one of the best one, two, or three, hitters in baseball for the foreseeable future, which gives you the best chance to continue winning.
After all, what’s the point of playing if you aren’t going to give your team the best chance to win every single year? The greatest organization in the history of sports has not been on top in 15 years and has just one championship over the last 20. Sign Soto and let a new Yankees dynasty have the best chance to begin.
