Jerry West played 14 excellent NBA seasons, is a 12-time All-NBA guard, and was a member of the 50th and 75th anniversary teams. Throughout Jerry’s career, he earned the nickname “Mr. Clutch” for his clutch performances not only on the field but in the front office as well.
West started to help shape the NBA when he was drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1960. West since that time has been a player, the general manager of the Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies, and a consultant for the Golden State Warriors, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Throughout West’s 64-year NBA tenure, he accomplished 9 championship rings on the court as a player, and off the court as a GM. West was also a 14-time All-Star, averaging 27 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists as career averages throughout his career.
West was also an elite defender, being named first-team All-NBA defense in four out of five years before retiring. West could have had more first-team All-NBA defensive awards, but the league did not start handing out the award until 5 years before he retired.
The league is very saddened to learn about the loss of West, “I valued my friendship with Jerry and the knowledge he shared with me over many years about basketball and life”. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
West was known as a perfectionist and had a need to be perfect, which caused him to be very hard on himself. West always held himself and his team to a high level and because of that standard West very rarely had a bad season as a player, or put together bad teams as a GM.
“The most important thing to do is to keep working hard and to never give up” - Jerry West
