Rutgers adds ex-Minnesota QB Kaliakmanis via Transfer Portal
It appears Rutgers has added some competition for quarterback Gavin Wimsatt for later this year after former Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis committed to Rutgers for the 2024 season.
Kaliakmanis comes to Rutgers to reunite with his old Offensive Coordinator from Minnesota, Kirk Ciarrocca, who just completed his first season as O.C. at Rutgers.
Back in November, Kaliakmanis announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal, and will reportedly have two years of eligibility remaining. Athan isn’t coming alone. His brother, Dino, a wide receiver is also transferring to Rutgers.
Kaliakmanis started 12 games this past season, completing 53 percent of his passes for 1,838 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
It will be intriguing to see what this means for incumbent quarterback, Gavin Wimsatt, who helped lead Rutgers to a 31-24 victory over Miami at the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl last week. Wimsatt did throw for 1,735 yards in the regular season, but only completed 48 percent of his passes. He did throw nine touchdowns against eight interceptions.
Wimsatt also proved dependable as a runner, coming up three yards shy of 500 yards rushing, and scored 11 touchdowns on the ground.
