Greg Schiano has long spoken about how much the Rutgers program has meant to him over the years. Four years ago he got the opportunity to return and finish the job he started way back in 2001. Now he'll get the chance to keep chopping right through the year 2030.

Schiano and Rutgers agreed to a six-year extension on Wednesday afternoon.  Schiano will reportedly make $6.25 million in 2024 under the new deal.

"I would like to thank President Holloway, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, the Board of Governors, and our entire team for their continued belief in what we are building," said Schiano. "Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey."

Rutgers went 6-6 this past season, tying the program record for Big Ten victories. Highlights included an opening-day rout of Northwestern and a fourth-quarter comeback against Michigan State.

The Scarlet Knights also employed one of the best defenses in the nation, ranked 19th overall. Rutgers held opponents to an average of 21.0 points, which was 27th nationally. Rutgers was 11th in passing yards allowing 175.9 yards per game, and boasted the ninth-best red zone defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, Rutgers had the Big Ten's top rusher in Kyle Monangai who posted 1,099 yards on 217 carries.

All-time Rutgers is 86-95 under Schiano with a 5-2 record in bowl games. Rutgers will appear in the Pinstripe Bowl on December 28 against the University of Miami (FLA).

ACADEMIC IMPACT:

While Rutgers has been improving on the field, the coach has also had an impact off the field in the classroom.

Finally, Rutgers football has been the home for academic achievement under Schiano. The Scarlet Knights led the nation in Academic Progress Rate during his first stint in 2010 and ranked second in the country in 2011.

Since returning the Scarlet Knights have seen 195 honorees to the Academic All-Big Ten list, including a program record 57 in 2021 and recorded the highest GPA in team history during the spring 2023 semester.
