Zach Wilson Has Career Performance After Week of Controversy
And just like that Zach Wilson gave the New York Jets the kind of performance they have been waiting nearly three whole years for.
Wilson put forth the best effort of his career, tossing for 301 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-6 romp of the Houston Texans. Wilson was deadly accurate with his throws and appeared more confident and assertive than he had been at any point in his brief Jets career.
“I thought he was outstanding today, ” Head Coach Robert Saleh said afterward.
Even Wilson, himself sounded different. “That’s what we want right there. That’s what we want every game to look like.”
The effort comes off a tumultuous week for Wilson. A story by The Athletic reported that Wilson was gun-shy about going back under center for the Jets and risking injury. The story created a lot of controversy as Wilson met with Robert Saleh to clear the air, while veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers blasted the media on his weekly spot on the Pat McAfee show.
The controversy continued Sunday when a report out of Utah-based Desert News claimed that Wilson and Robert Saleh agreed to a mutual parting of ways and that the quarterback would be traded after the season.
Saleh said that he told Wilson to let it rip, and the quarterback did just that against the Texans.
According to Rich Cimini, Wilson told players in the locker room, he had “nothing to lose.”
What Does it All Mean?
Either one of two things happened. 1) It finally has clicked for Wilson and he has figured out how to play looser than in the past. Or, 2) He knows his days in New York are numbered, feels no pressure, and is showcasing himself to suitors.
Looking Ahead:
If Wilson keeps this up, some team will undoubtedly give the Jets some good compensation for him in the off-season.
