Zach Wilson Alleged Reluctance to Play Adds to Jets Drama
Drama seems to follow the New York Jets around like a shadow. It’s always lingering. On Monday reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt reported that quarterback Zach Wilson is reluctant to play for the team due to risk of injury.
The story has created a tidal wave for the franchise, as there are now legit questions about whether the Jets should even go back to Wilson following Sunday’s 13-8 loss to Atlanta where both Trevor Seimian and Tim Boyle looked overmatched.
As a way to try to extinguish the flames of controversy, Head Coach Robert Saleh told reporters he had not come to a decision on a quarterback for Sunday’s game against Houston. Moreover, he confided with reporters that he spoke with Wilson himself, and the former number two pick wants to play.
“If he was reluctant to play, guys, he wouldn’t be here,” Saleh told reporters. “He believes he’s the best quarterback in this room…and wants to win.”
To date it is not clear who will start on Sunday for the Jets. If Wilson starts will his teammates have his back after this story came out that the quarterback is reluctant to play? In a way his reluctance is an indictment of his teammates on the offensive line and the coaches. If Wilson is benched again and either Boyle or Seimian starts, what does that say about Wilson’s days being numbered in New York?
The Jets are left with nothing but questions, and the answers aren’t too appealing either.
