Mets Chaos Continues as Eppler Steps Down as General Manager
And just like that the dysfunction is once again following the New York Mets.
Days after the team dismissed Buck Showalter as manager, and fresh off naming David Stearns the new President of Baseball Operations, Billy Eppler threw a curveball, stepping down as General Manager amid an MLB investigation into his handling of the injury list.
The news is a shocker. It was believed that Eppler would remain with the Mets and work under Stearns beginning this off-season. Instead, Stearns and owner Steve Cohen will not only need a field manager, they will need a new general manager as well.
According to Jeff Passon’s report, the practice of placing players on the injury list with “fake” injuries is nothing new. It is ” a long-accepted but ethically murky part of baseball.”
The Mets placed 25 players on the IL a total of 28 times during the season, which was ranked 16th in the sport.
Instability In Front Office
Unfortunately for Cohen, Eppler’s resignation signifies the third GM under his ownership who has had to abruptly resign over a scandal. When Cohen first took ownership he appointed Jared Porter as GM. Porter was fired after 38 days after he sent explicit images to a female reporter.
The Mets pivoted, hired Zack Scott, who didn’t last long either, resigning after a DWI incident.
Cohen had to bring in Sandy Alderson, the Mets general manager from 2010 to 2018 to become the team’s President to settle things down. He did that, and it paved the way to Showalter and Eppler. Now, Cohen faces another former GM stepping away in disgrace.
Who is the Leak?
Many are wondering who the leak is? Was it Buck Showalter?
The Injury story isn’t the only concern for Eppler. There was a story that leaked earlier in the week citing friction between Eppler and Showalter over the playing time for Daniel Voglebach. Eppler wanted Voglebach in the lineup everyday, while Showalter was tired of playing the struggling, lumbering DH.
