Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh Faces Suspension, Affects Game Against Rutgers
When the Rutgers Scarlet Knights take the field in late September in Ann Arbor to square off with Big Ten rival, Michigan, it will do so without a very important face on the Wolverine sideline.
Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is facing a four-game suspension for recruiting violations. According to reports, Harbaugh is facing a Level I violation, which is the most serious kind of violation for not cooperating with NCAA enforcement.

Harbaugh is said to be in negotiations with the NCAA on a resolution to the suspension. Harbaugh’s attorney Thomas Mars said in a statement:
“We are continuing to work cooperatively with the NCAA staff on an enforcement matter. At this time, we are not allowed to comment on possible penalties or other aspects of the matter.”
Many purport Harbaugh to miss the first four games of the season which would include a critical Big Ten matchup with Rutgers on September 23.

This would be a huge development for the Scarlet Knights who are 1-8 all-time against the Wolverines and have never beaten Michigan since Harbaugh became its head coach in 2015. The Scarlet Knights did have a couple of close calls against Michigan. In 2020, Rutgers found itself in an epic back-and-forth with Michigan that the Wolverines pulled out late 48-42.
Two years ago, the Scarlet Knights couldn’t hold a late lead and lost 20-13 to Michigan out in Ann Arbor.
The NCAA football season begins August 26 with Week Zero. Michigan doesn’t begin play until September 2 when it plays host to East Carolina. Ironically, a suspension of Harbaugh would come as Michigan opens the season with four straight games at home.
Rutgers begins its season on Sunday, September 3 against Northwestern at SHI Stadium.
