Austin Wells Returns to Light Patriots Path to Victory
Austin Wells made his return to the Somerset Patriots lineup a triumphant one as he drove in a pair on a double in the seventh inning of the Patriots 7-4 victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the first game between the Yankees and Mets double-A affiliates at TD Bank Ballpark.
Wells was recalled from Single-A Tampa — where he rehabbed from an extended stint on the Injury List as he recovered from a rib injury.
Ranked third in the Yankees farm system, Wells slashed .261/.360/.479 with 55 hits, eight doubles, 12 home runs and 43 RBI last season for the Double-A Eastern League Championship team. From the point Wells joined the Patriots on July 5 through the end of the season (playoffs included), he led all Eastern League batters with 51 RBI. In total, Wells led the Patriots in the following offensive categories from the time he joined the team through the end of the regular season: AVG (.261), HR (12), RBI (43), SLG (.479), OPS (.839), H (55) and TB (101).
