The Isles have seen a lot of the Flyers lately, three of their last five games have come against Philly, with New York winning all three match-ups to improve to 15-14-6 on the season.
“You know what you’re getting shift after shift from Zach,” head coach Barry Trotz said of the 37-year old Parise. “You’re getting max effort, you’re getting a high battle mentality … Those are great pro attributes.”
“It feels great to contribute. Most importantly, we got the two points we needed to get to keep climbing,” Parise said. “I take a lot of pride in playing hard every night. Hopefully we keep heating up in the near future.”
The Flyers grabbed the early 2-0 lead, but couldn’t hold on as the Isles responded with goals from Noah Dobson and Anders Lee to knot it up at two-a-piece.
The Isles grabbed the lead for the first time in the second period on Matthew Barzal’s power play goal, his eighth goal of the season to make it 3-2. Philly tied it at three, 90 seconds into the third period on Gerry Mayhew’s goal.
While the Islanders grabbed the win, it was a historic night for one Flyers’ player: Keith Yandle, who played in his 965th consecutive regular season game, breaking Doug Jarvis’ all-time record.
“It hasn’t really sunk in too much yet. It’s something I’m super grateful for, but I’m grateful for playing (even) one game in this league,” said Yandle who started the streak back in 2009. “To be a part of the NHL and the NHL family for the last 16 years has been more than a dream come true.”
STARS 5 – DEVILS 1
Meanwhile, across the river in Jersey, the Devils struggled to find their offense in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Stars. New Jersey has lost five of its last six contests, and stands at 15-21-5.
The Stars jumped out to a lightning quick 3-0 lead thanks in major part to Joe Pavelski, who scored two of Dallas’ three goals in the opening period. Pavelski has 19 goals on the season for the Stars. Jacob Peterson scored Dallas’ second goal of the first period at the 9:45 mark.
Fifteen seconds in the second period, the Stars struck again on Roope Hintz’s 19th goal to make it 4-0.
New Jersey scored its loan goal of the evening from Jesper Bratt on assists from Jake Hughes and Damon Severson.
