Rutgers Women’s Soccer Rolls in NCAA Second Round

The Rutgers women’s soccer team showcased why they are the number one seed in the NCAA tournament, flexing their muscle in a 4-0 shutout of the St. Louis Billikens at Yurcak Field in Piscataway on Friday night.
Rutgers advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015, and will host TCU tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Rutgers dominated the contest in every phase. They outshot St. Louis 27-7, including dominating on the nets, 18-3 on shots on goal.
Three different Scarlet Knights contributed to the victory with a goal. Freshman Riley Tiernan led the way with a pair of goals and an assist. Senior Amirah Ali posted a goal and an assist as well. Freshman Kylie Daigle notched a goal, as senior Frankie Tagliaferri and Emma Misal contributed assists in the win.
Ali notched the first goal of the game, and her 10th goal of the season, nearly four minutes into the contest when she took a cross feed from Tagliaferri and punched it in for the 1-0 lead.

Rutgers held onto that slim 1-0 lead deep into the second half when it became a Rutgers offensive onslaught. Tiernan tallied the first of her two goals in the 49th minute when she took a pass from Ali and charged down the center of field and smashed the ball home from the top of the box.

20 minutes later Tiernan added her second goal of the night when she bounced off a defender, cut around two others and kicked the ball practically in the same location as her first goal on the top of the right corner of the net.

Ten minutes later Daigle joined the party with her third goal of the season. All told Rutgers scored three goals in a matter of 30 minutes.
