deGrom Returns Tonight as Mets Win 7th Straight on Monday
The Mets won their seventh straight game on Monday night in a 7-3 win over the Washington Nationals, but all eyes are on tonight.
No, not just the trade deadline, which has left many Mets fans with sweaty palms as the team’s only moves were to acquire Daniel Vogelbach and Tyler Naquin up to this point. No, the focus will be on the mound when number 48 returns to hill: Jacob deGrom.
deGrom hasn’t pitched in a Major League game since July 7, 2021 when he tossed seven innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. At that time, deGrom had an ERA of 1.08 and was a shoe-in to win a third Cy Young Award. Arm and shoulder problems plagued deGrom’s return to the hill over the last 12 months, but, now he is finally healthy and ready to pitch in a Major League game again.
“This is a team game. The ultimate goal is to win a World Series,” deGrom said. “Watching those guys go out there and compete, but it’s more fun to compete with them.”
Good morning.

“We are all excited to watch him throw,” Max Scherzer told reporters after he held the Nationals to just two runs over 6.2 innings of work to improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Mets have been waiting to see what its rotation would look like with the two Cy Young Award winners back-to-back in the rotation. The thought back in spring training was that both deGrom and Scherzer would be healthy the entire season. That of course hasn’t been the case with deGrom making his 2022 season debut tonight. Scherzer himself missed six weeks earlier this year with an oblique strain. Now both starters are finally able to pitch on the same team.
While Mets fans have grown accustomed to the deGrom who can top 100 mph and blow away hitters at ease, don’t be shocked to see deGrom tap into the mid to upper 90s tonight and go about four or five innings at the max. Keep in mind, physically this is like April for deGrom. He’ll need a handful of starts before one can expect to see him dominate the way he once did for the Amazin’s.
