The roster this year has 43 players who played in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, eight starters on offense and defense. Nine players are in their sixth year of college football.
Recruiting has been good to coach Schiano and the Scarlet Knights. They signed its highest-rated class since joining the Big Ten. The 2022 class is ranked No. 26 by ESPN, the highest since 2012. RU signed 42 student-athletes, with 21 of them from New Jersey.
Coach Schiano is in his third season back and 14th overall as the Scarlet Knights leader. He has 76 victories and is two shy of program leader Frank Burns.
This season the players will wear a patch with the initials REM on it. This will be in remembrance of former Rutgers Athletic Director Robert “Bob” Mulcahy who passed away in February.

Mulcahy was the AD from 1998-2009 and was very instrumental in building Rutgers football into a big time program in the nation. His hire of Schiano snapped a nearly 30-year postseason drought to advance to the Insight bowl in 2005.
Last season the Knights started out 3-0 which was their best start since 2012. In the Big Ten RU had two big road wins, a come from behind victory over Illinois and a five touchdown victory against Indiana. The defense was second in the conference on third down conversions. RU was 5-0 when they committed no turnovers and seven players from the roster was invited to the postseason all-star games.
The annual spring game comes after the 15 spring practice sessions. This is the first opportunity for fans to see their Scarlet Knights ahead of the 2022 season.
