NHL Roundup: Devils Can’t Keep Pace with Avalanche
Avalanche 3 – Devils 1
The suddenly young New Jersey Devils struggled to keep pace with the best team in the NHL, falling to the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 last night in Denver.
After a scoreless first period, it was all Colorado in the second period, spearheaded by Logan O’Connor’s turn-around shot that slipped under goalie Andrew Hammond for the first goal of the night. Andre Burakovsky and Artturi Lehkonen would follow with goals of their own to build a 3-0 Avalanche lead.

Even though New Jersey out shot Colorado, 30-27, the Devils couldn’t score until Jesper Bratt’s 24th goal of the season, midway through the second period. New Jersey now stands at 24-42-6.
Meanwhile, the Islanders struggled to hold off the Pittsburgh Penguins offense, as the Penguins won 6-3. Jack Guentzel led Pittsburgh with a pair of goals, and Sidney Crosby tallied a goal of his own that helped built a 4-1 Pittsburgh lead.
Jake Guentzel had 2 goals in his first 21 games against the Islanders...he now has 3 in the last 2 games.

The Islanders tried to make a game of it in the third period with goals by Anders Lee and Zdeno Chara to bring the Isles back to within two goals at 5-3. However Guentzel’s second and final goal of the night put the game away with a little under a minute to go.
