Schiano Defends Rutgers Football After 2-Game Skid
A fiery Greg Schiano defended the development of his football team following last Saturday’s 22-0 loss to Iowa.
The remarks came after questions by the press about the play of quarterback Gavin Wimset who struggled in Saturday’s loss.
“The tough thing of where we are, if we all together on July 31, and someone said you go to the fourth quarter in Kinet Stadium down 6-0 against Iowa, and you are 6-3, would you take it? I would take it in July. We are a developmental program. Let’s realize who we are. That’s one of the biggest things I talk to my team about.”
“The way we play the game has allowed us to be in every game in the fourth quarter this year with an opportunity to win. In the past that wasn’t always the case; so to me that is an improvement. We would all to go from 4-8 to 12-0, but that’s not going to work at Rutgers. Maybe somewhere else, but not here.
“Maybe if you go into the NIL and get all these players with a bankroll the size of Detroit, then maybe you turn it. But we know who we are. The way we play the game now may not be how we play it two years from now.”
The comments come off the heels of a two-game skid for Rutgers. With two games remaining in the season, Rutgers (6-4) would love to get another victory before their bowl game in December/January. Schiano’s impassioned remarks were not only a shot at the critics, but it was really a call to action to his players to believe in themselves and shut out the noise.
