And in the end, the New Jersey Devils didn't have enough to get past the mighty Carolina Hurricanes.  Carolina finished off the Devils 3-2 in overtime to knock New Jersey out of the playoffs in five games of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Devils did all they could in Game 5 to extend the season, holding the lead twice, but it wasn't enough.

Brent Burns tied the game for Carolina in the second period when he took a pass at the top of the circle and took his shot that split defenders and sailed past goalie Akira Schmid to tie it up.

Finally in overtime with a little less than 13 minutes remaining in the period, Jesper Fast took a pass on the power play and shot the puck from just outside the circle and nailed it to give Carolina the series.

Schmid, who was terrific at times in this postseason, stopped 36 shots for the Devils.

Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier contributed goals for New Jersey.
