Recap: Eastern Conference First Round Playoffs
Milwaukee Bucks vs. Miami Heat: In Game 1 Bucks star Giannis Antetokunmpo exited the game early after landing on his back. That set the tone for the rest of the series.
The Heat took Game 1 but dropped Game 2. The Heat cruised to a win in Game 3 giving them a 2-1 lead. Giannis came back in Game 4 and recorded a triple-double, but he was not the storyline.
Jimmy Butler went off for 56 points on 19-of-28 from the field. He led them to a win and had a good closeout game. In Game 5 Butler had forced the game into overtime hitting a go-ahead basket after an inbound play.
In overtime, the Heat took control and did not look back. Butler ended with 42 points and the Heat became the sixth eighth seed to win against a No. 1 seed. The Heat will now face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Boston Celtics vs. Atlanta Hawks: In games 1 and 2 the Boston Celtics looked like they should be the favorite to win the East again. Five players scored 10 points or more in Game 1 leading to a 112-99 win.
In Game 2 Derrick White shows up in a big way with 26 points and seven rebounds. The Celtics won again 119-106, with a 2-0 lead the Celtics were looking for the sweep.
The Hawks had other plans in mind Hawks guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray scored a combined 56 points leading the Hawks to a win. In Game 4 the Celtics star forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each had 31, and Young had 35 but it was not enough as the Celtics win and looked to close out the Hawks in Game 5.
Young helped the Hawks stave off elimination scoring 38 points and hitting a step-back 3-pointer near half-court. Game 6 the Celtics finally put the nail in the coffin as both Tatum and Brown score over 30 in a 128-120 win. The Celtics will now play the Philadelphia 76ers in the semifinals.
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Brooklyn Nets: The focal point of this series was Joel Embiid he showed out but so did the rest of the Sixers. In Game 1 three players scored over 20 points.
Despite Mikal Bridges scoring 30 points for the Nets, they didn’t stand a chance of losing by 20. Maxey was able to take over Game 2 scoring 33 points, Embiid and Tobias Harris helped scoring 20 each.
They came out with a 12-point win even with Cam Johnson scoring 28 points and Bridges having 21. Game 3 was a chippy game that included two ejections. One was James Harden for his hit below the belt on Royce O’Neale.
The other was Nic Claxton for staring down Embiid for too long after dunking on him. Claxton and Embiid had problems with each other earlier in the game. After Claxton dunked on Embiid, he stared him down and stepped over him, Embiid would kick his leg up tripping Claxton over.
Claxton would get a technical foul and Embiid got a flagrant foul. Embiid was hurt all game, Harden went out, so Maxey stepped up and helped the Sixers escape with a 102-97 win.
In Game 4 Embiid was out but the rest of the team took care of business. Harris came alive for 25 points leading the Sixers to a clean sweep on the Nets and leading to a date with the Celtics in the semifinals.
Cleveland Cavaliers vs. New York Knicks: The leading question coming into this series was Julius Randle’s health after spraining his ankle at the end of the season. Not his usual self but had 17 points in Game 1. Jalen Brunson would take control in Game 1 he had 27 points leading the Knicks to a big Game 1 win.
Coming off the bench Josh Hart had 17. Cavs star guard Donovan Mitchell had 38 points in a losing effort. In Game 2 the Cavs came out with something to prove. Darius Garland was the star in this one with 32 points and going 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Mitchell had 17 points and 13 assists.
The Cavs pull one out to tie the series at one. Game 3 was an ugly game, but the Knicks were able to pull away. Brunson scored 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Randle couldn’t get it going with 11 points 3-of-15 from the field. The X-factor RJ Barrett scored 19 points after two rough games in Cleveland.
The Knicks won by 20 holding the Cavs to 79 points the first team all season was held to under 80 points. Game 4 was a lot closer, but the Knicks showed they were the better team.
Mitchell went cold in the second half only scoring 11 points for the game, Garland led the way for the Cavs with 23 points. Brunson and Barrett led the Knicks to an important victory. Brunson scored 29 points while Barrett had 26.
Needing one more win to advance to the conference semis the Knicks got past the Cavs on the road. Brunson and Barrett once again led the way, but Randle reinjured his ankle.
This will be significant down the road for the Knicks, they will need Randle in the later stages of the playoffs. The Knicks advance to take on the Miami Heat in the conference semis.
