NCAA Tournament Bracket Announced
The NCAA Tournament bracket was announced Sunday night on CBS.
Locally, while many were shocked that Rutgers failed to qualify for the tournament, and will likely settle for a NIT bid, three local programs did make the tournament: Princeton, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Iona.
FDU made the tournament thanks in major part to a loophole in the Division I rules where Merrimack — the team that beat FDU in the Northeast Conference Tournament Championship — couldn’t advance to the NCAA Tournament because they were ineligible as they are still in a four-year period to reclassify from Division II to Division I. As a result FDU was awarded Merrimack’s spot in the tournament.
FDU faces Texas Southern in a First Four match-up on Wednesday.
As for Princeton, they are the 15th seed after capturing the Ivy League title over the weekend. The Tigers will face Arizona on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Iona, led by Rick Pitino whose name has been linked to the St. John’s job, advanced to the Tournament after capturing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. The Gales will face U-Conn in the first round of the West Regional on Friday.
