deGrom Good, Braves Better
BRAVES 3 – METS 2
Jacob deGrom was really good on Thursday night for the New York Mets. Unfortunately, the Mets couldn’t muster much offense against Atlanta’s ace, Max Fried as a late rally fell short in a 3-2 loss. Atlanta wound up taking three of four from the Amazin’s this week, trimming their first place lead over the Braves to 3.5 games.
The two arch rivals won’t see each other again until the final week of the regular season.
Atlanta jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning on a double by Dansby Swanson and a RBI single by Austin Riley.
The Mets would rally to tie the game in the top half of the fifth inning on Mark Canha’s two-run bomb to left-center, but New York would not score again.
The Mets were befallen by a number of missed opportunities. Earlier in the third inning, Canha doubled and Brett Baty singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. However Fried bounced back to strike out James McCann and Brandon Nimmo, before getting Starling Marte to bounce a ball back to him for the third and final out.

In the ninth inning, Francisco Lindor led off with a single before running into a base running mistake when Pete Alonso popped a ball straight up into the air. Lindor, who initially slid into second base on the hit and run, noticed the Alonso’s pop up go straight up into the air, and in order to avoid getting doubled up, hustled back toward first. Unfortunately for Lindor the pop up fell between Ronald Acuna Jr. and Vaughn Grissom, allowing Acuna to pick it up and throw Lindor out at second base.
With Alonso on first, Daniel Vogelbach struck out swinging, and Jeff McNeil grounded out to end it.
Jacob deGrom took the loss. He gave up three runs in 6.2 innings of work. deGrom is 2-1 2.31 ERA.
