New York Mets announce Old Timer’s Day for This August
It’s official, Old Timer’s Day is coming back to Queens. Now can we have a baseball season?
The New York Mets officially announced that they will welcome back more than 40 former players who span the 60-year history of the franchise to participate in Old Timer’s Day festivities on August 27 before the 7:10 game against the Colorado Rockies.
Gates will open at 4:10 p.m. with the ceremony beginning at 5 p.m.
Among the former Mets expected back for the event include: 1962 original Met, Frank Thomas; 1969 World Series Champions Ron Swaboda and John Matlack; 1986 World Series Game 6 hero, Mookie Wilson; Howard Johnson and Bobby Ojeda; Mr. Grand Slam: Robin Veturna; former relief pitcher Turk Wendell; former left fielder Cliff Floyd, and 2015 postseason hero, Daniel Murphy.
It was not mentioned in the Mets press release whether Hall of Famer Mike Piazza, or former third baseman David Wright and shortstop Jose Reyes will be on hand, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t be involved in some capacity. Of course, World Series champions Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling will be in the broadcast booth that night.
The Mets have not hosted an Old Timer’s Day since 1994. With Steve Cohen’s purchase of the franchise last year, the Mets have been trying to make up for lost time by recognizing its past players.
Last summer the Mets retired Jerry Koosman’s number 36. Later this year, they will retire Hernandez’s number 17.
Watch live today at 1:30 p.m. as Robin Ventura, Cliff Floyd and Daniel Murphy discuss the return of Old Timersโ Day.
