49ers vs. Rams NFC Championship Preview
The San Francisco 49ers did something most teams cannot and that was beat the top seeded Green Bay Packers on their turf in freezing temperatures.
It was not a pretty game to say the least. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo did not complete his first pass or get a first down until the middle of the second quarter. Special teams and defense is what carried the Niners to their win.
They blocked a field goal before halftime, blocked a punt in the fourth and returned it for a touchdown. After holding the Packers to a three and out, the Niners ran the clock down and kicker Robbie Gould hit the game winning field goal. The Niners will keep running the ball against the Rams. Garoppolo will have to play better to give his team a chance.
The Rams escaped a late Buccaneers ralley in the second half as they won 30-27.
For most of the game it looked like the Rams would run away with the game going up 27-3 by the middle of the third quarter. Rams miscues led to the Bucs getting back in the game and tying it up late in the fourth quarter. A bad snap went over Matthew Stafford’s head and Cam Akers fumbled in Bucs territory.
Through all of that and the Bucs tying up the game the Rams stayed solid. Stafford connected with Kupp on a 44-yard pass to set up the game winning field goal. If the Rams want to win and go to the Super Bowl they have to cut down on the turnovers. A defense like the Niners will be looking to force fumbles all game long.
The last time they met: These two meet up twice a year being that they both are in the same division. The Niners have won both times. In both meetings they forced Stafford to throw two interceptions. The first meeting wasn’t close the Niners won 31-10, Deeboo Samuel had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. Garoppolo threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns. The next game they played the Rams got off to a fast start leading 17-3 but in the second half the Niners came back. Deeboo Samuel once again had a receiving touchdown and rushing touchdown. The Niners forced the game into overtime and won the game by a field goal. Can the 49ers sweep the Rams this season who built this team to win the Super Bowl this year?
