Rutgers in National Spotlight as Final Hours til Gator Bowl Approach
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are just a few hours away from kicking off the 2021 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida against Wake Forest. And their trip is garnering national attention.
How much attention you ask? Well, Rutgers appearance in the Bowl Game caught the attention of Forbes Magazine, which published a story last night titled: “Rutgers Surprise Gator Bowl Appearance Gives It a Chance to Market Its Football Program and University.”
The article reviews the Gator Bowl Press Conference that was held Thursday with Head Coach Greg Schiano and Athletic Administrator Kevin MacConnell, who both saw taking this invite as a 5-7 team, after Texas A&M had to back out due to a COVID outbreak as a unique opportunity.
“If you bought a 3 1/2-hour block of time on ESPN,” MacConnell said, “what would that cost you, what is that worth? And the game is the lead-in to the College Football Playoff games, which I think is great for the exposure.
“If you could pick a time,” he added, “that’s a pretty good time. The media exposure, the social media stuff that our guys can keep pumping out to recruits, all of that exposure—we just did a soft launch for (2022) season tickets, so that’s a nice surprise. (The bowl) has got to help.
“We didn’t expect to have anybody talking about us once the season ended,” he added. “So, it’s hard to put a dollar figure on it, but there’s absolutely no downside.”
Meanwhile, RU made its final preparations last night for the game.
