New York Mets Embroiled in Home Plate Controversy
The New York Mets find themselves in the midst of some wild controversy after Pete Alonso was thrown out at home plate to end last night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
In a game that resulted in a 1-0 Chicago victory, Alonso was ruled out at home plate after the umpires determined via replay review that 1) Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya did not impede the runner’s ally, and 2) that it was unclear whether Alonso touched home plate.
While it appears that Amaya has his foot on the plate, there is legitimate debate about what is and what is not impeding the runner. MLB ruled after the game that the catcher’s position was correct, and that he did not straddle the line and prevent Alonso from attempting to slide in.
However, Andy Martino of SNY posted the exact photos that circulated through baseball in Spring Training that states stepping on home is illegal. Ironically the pictures used show catchers standing in front of home, where as Amaya was standing to the side of the plate in fair territory.
New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was visibly upset, voicing his displeasure with the call.
Still, the big problem for the Mets is this: Pete Alonso never clearly touched home plate. His hand hovers over home, then disappears in a cloud of dirt and catching equipment. There was no conclusive evidence he touched home before the tag.
The Mets (15-15) have bigger issues. Their offense has disappeared. They are hitting .197 as a team in the last seven games, and were 0-for-5 with Runners in Scoring Position.
NEW YORK METS FANS REACTION
Of course, leave it to Mets fans to voice all kinds of opinions, even concocting conspiracy theories over the controversial play. One thing is clear, they love their new manager, Carlos Mendoza who went all out for his players, echoing Terry Collins famous “ass in the jackpot” meltdown.
