New York Mets Silenced by Brewers in Windy Opener
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 29: Jackson Chourio #11 of the Milwaukee Brewers steals second base under the tag attempt of Jeff McNeil #1 of the New York Mets during the top of the first inning in the home opener at Citi Field on March 29, 2024 in New York City.
If the New York Mets were hoping to change the narrative in 2024, Opening Day just wasn’t the showcase. The Mets were held to one hit for the first time ever on Opening Day as the Milwaukee Brewers came away with a 3-1 win to start the season.
The only hit the Mets got on Friday came from a solo shot by Starling Marte, who got just enough of a Willy Peralta fastball to send it over the left field fence.
It was a great moment for Marte, who had to battle through injuries for most of the 2023 season. When healthy, Marte is a sparkplug for the Mets offense.
Willy Peralta vs. Jose Quintana
After serving up the homer to Marte, Peralta dominated the Mets. He held New York to just one hit over six innings while fanning eight batters. Peralta has owned the Mets in his career, and Friday was no different.
As for his opponent, New York Mets starter Jose Quintana, he struggled with his control. Quintana walked two, gave up four hits and two runs and took the lose. He tossed 85 pitches in 4.2 innings of work. With no ace on this Mets team, the Mets need Quintana to pitch as close to lights out as possible.
Rhys Hoskins Slide:
What’s a Mets game without a little bit of controversy? Former Philadelphia Phillies star Rhys Hoskins, now a member of the Brew Crew slid hard into second base, with his spikes up into the shin of Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil. The Mets did not like as both benches cleared. No real punches were thrown, but there was plenty of jawing.
“We didn’t like it, but it was legal,” Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza said. “It was a late slide.”
The Mets have a history with Hoskins who once took about 30 seconds to round the bases on a home run against the Mets when he was a member of the Phillies.
The New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers continue their series on Saturday and Sunday, with both games starting at 1:40 p.m.
4 Bold Predictions For The 2024 MLB Season
We’ve officially made it to Major League Baseball’s opening day. And we’ve got four bold predictions for the 2024 MLB season.
Last year felt like a nice setup for this season to really hit one out of the park, so to speak. 2023 saw the new MLB rules take hold. This was notable with the pitch clock and the attempt to speed up the game. The looming question of what’s next for Shohei Ohtani was lingering all year. Obviously the uncommon pitcher/hitter superstar chose to stay in southern California, but headed to move over to the Dodgers.
A consistent, no-frills style of baseball led the Texas Rangers to defeat a young and scrappy Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series. Both have similar rosters this year, but will either team be as good?
What Are Some 2024 MLB Points Of Intrigue?
We are already off to a unique start with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers splitting the Seoul Series in Korea. We are certainly teed up for an exciting seven months of baseball.
Some factors came close to finding their way into my four bold predictions, but were not strong enough to grab a spot in the lineup. However, they do remain open questions for baseball fans to look out for as the season unfolds.
In New York, will the Yankees adding the fierce bat of Juan Soto to the team bounce them back from a disappointing season? Soto may have to make up for the lack of depth at pitching now the Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole is starting the season injured.
In Atlanta, the Braves are so talented across the board, it’s hard to pick against them in all of the National League. However, I do expect some epic NL East clashes throughout the year between division rivals, the Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
We shall see about all of the above. In the meantime, let’s hit some 2024 MLB bold predictions to get the ball rolling.
