Tommy DeVito Mania Wonderfully Takes Over MetLife Stadium
It’s been called “the most ‘local’ story in NFL history,” and the story just keeps getting better. Tommy “Cutlets” DeVito continues to take center stage for the New York Giants. Last night, in a last-second victory over the Green Bay Packers, DeVito-mania took over MetLife stadium once again.
His initials are “TD.” Accordingly, DeVito (and his father) wear a prominent and very visible TD chain. In week 14 of this NFL season, it stood for touchdown. DeVito threw for one, and led the Giants to a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. To break down the impressive numbers, DeVito only missed on four passes, finishing 17 for 21. He has led the Giants to three straight wins, throwing zero interceptions over that time.
However, that’s just part of the fun of this story. Let’s face it: the Giants season was considered a total bust and major disappointment a month ago. Daniel Jones’ knee injury caused him to miss the year, the team couldn’t find the end zone, and was finding every way possible to lose the game. At around the same time, the narrative started around the Giants needing to draft a new quarterback (likely having a top-five pick). And then, in steps DeVito.
From New Jersey To …. New Jersey
DeVito, hailing from Cedar Grove, grew up nine miles from the Giants practice facility and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Furthermore, Don Bosco Prep, where DeVito starred as a high school quarterback, is only 16 miles from the stadium (Ramsey).
“It takes me 12 minutes to get here,” DeVito told Jordan Ranaan of ESPN. In this feature, he explains how he still lives at home with his parents, and he enjoys the conveniences of doing so. Imagine waking up during the week, seeing a Giants poster on your bedroom wall and then going to work that day as their starting quarterback nine miles down the road.
DeVito Has Already Made This A Memorable Season
It’s the story we didn’t know we needed. Each week, new layers to the story just makes it better. As the Monday Night Football cameras often panned over to DeVito’s parents in the stands, we were introduced to DeVito’s agent, Sean Stellato. Dressed in all black and sporting a black fedora, Stellato was as animated as DeVito’s father Tom. Stellato was also on the receiving end of a celebratory kiss on the cheek from Tom.
In the MetLife Stadium parking lot, DeVito-themed tailgating sites were found all over. In fact, DeVito’s family threw a bash of their own, cooking up 300 chicken cutlet sandwiches. Meanwhile, the New York Giants merch store shows Tommy DeVito jerseys, are all sold out in sizes up to XL.
Shortly after Randy Bullock’s field goal successfully flew through the uprights, we saw DeVito in a thrilling embrace with head coach Briand Daboll. DeVito’s signature gesture, the “finger pinch,” was seen waving everywhere.
DeVito has often said his hand gesture does not have a name. It’s just a feeling. That’s exactly what is happening throughout Big Blue Nation. DeVito mania took another step in permeating the New York Giants 2023 season. With our hands all in the Italian gesture, we are loving every minute of it.
