Another day, another thrilling win the Big Ten for Rutgers men's hoops.
This time the Scarlet Knights took the Ohio State Buckeyes into overtime, before a huge three-pointer by Mawot Mag started an 8-3 run by Rutgers to close the game out en route to a thrilling 68-64 victory. Rutgers is now 13-5 on the year, and 5-2 in the Big Ten.
A see-saw second half that saw 18 different lead changes paved the way to a 57-all tie heading in to overtime where Rutgers took full control. Cam Spencer, who was the star of the week in Rutgers win over Northwestern, put Rutgers out front with a jumper at the 3:23 mark to make it 60-59.
After both teams exchanged free-throws, Mawot Mag blew the game open when he took a pass from Paul Mulcahy and drilled a three-pointer to put Rutgers up 65-61 with 38 seconds to go. Seconds later, Mag would convert on a pair of free-throws to give Rutgers a six-point lead. Spencer closed out the scoring for Rutgers with a free-throw shot of his own.
Mag had 15 points, and eight rebounds in the victory.
As for Spencer, he had another incredible day, leading the team in scoring with 21 points, six assists and four steals.
"What a great college basketball game," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "Ohio State is terrific, they real physical and well-coached. To be able to come away with a 'W' after 45 minutes, it was a really difficult basketball game. These guys, they all stepped up. It was one of those games – the ball wasn't going in early. We just stayed the course, hung with it. Our defense always gives us a chance. I'm just real proud."
