Somerset Patriots Swept in League Championship
And in the end, the Somerset Patriots were just one run short. The New York Yankees double-A affiliate fell to the Detroit Tigers double-A affiliate, Erie Seawolves 3-2 in Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship Series at TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night, assuring Erie's second consecutive Double-A Eastern League title, and a sweep of the series with Somerset. https://twitter.com/SOMPatriots/status/1838756221194481792 Erie's Chris Meyers had a huge night for the Seawolves. Not only did the left fielder go 2-for-4 and knock in two of Erie's three runs, but he robbed Spencer Jones of sure extra bases in the bottom of the sixth. Meyers got the ball rolling for Erie in the top of the first inning when he lined a single to center off Somerset starter Cam Schlittler for the first run of the night. https://twitter.com/OpenMikeNJ/status/1838736648969810168 An inning later, Schlittler lost control of the strike zone for the Patriots. He walked Erie's Eliezer Alfonzo and Brady Allen, and hit Carlos Mendoza with a pitch in the dirt to load the bases. Austin Murr drew a walk to score Alfonzo to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Meyers came up again and dribbled a single through the hole at third, scoring Allen with to make it 3-0. Schlittler lasted four innings for Somerset. He was charged with three runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. The score would remain 3-0 until Somerset's Tyler Hardman smashed a two-run homer off the back wall in left to bring Somerset to within a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. https://twitter.com/SOMPatriots/status/1838740469922115962 Unfortunately for Somerset, Hardman's homer was the last time a Patriots player would reach base the rest of the night. Earning the win was Erie's Austin Bergner who held Somerset scoreless over six innings of work. SPENCER JONES Before Game 2, Jones was named to the 2024 Double-A Eastern League All-Star Team, along with former teammate Agustin Ramirez.
