Hurricanes Overpower Islanders, Rangers Await
It was the end of the road for the New York Islanders.
Meanwhile, the New York Rangers now know — officially — who their next opponent will be in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals: The Carolina Hurricanes.
The Canes did away with the Islanders 6-3 in Game 5 to advance to the next round to face New York’s other resident team, which just so happens to be the best team that holds the President’s Trophy.
Like they had all season when they revived a seemingly dead season, Patrick Roy’s club fought back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at three-a-piece thanks to second-period goals by Brock Nelson and Casey Cizikas.
But, in the third period, it was too much Carolina. The Hurricanes overwhelmed the Islanders in the period scoring three goals, two of them coming in a matter of eight seconds as Jack Drury and Stefan Noesen lit the lamp for the Canes.
RANGERS vs. HURRICANES
While the Islanders season is over, the Rangers are now on deck for Carolina. This figures to be a bruising match-up between two of the East’s best teams.
The Rangers and Hurricanes met three times in the regular season with New York holding a slight 2-1 edge. The Rangers won a pair of one-score games, 2-1 on November 2 and 1-0 on March 12. The only game Carolina won was a 6-1 decision back on January 2.
The Rangers and Canes last met in the playoffs two years ago, a series the Rangers won in seven games. Don’t be shocked if this one goes the distance as well.
Game 1 of the Series has yet to be scheduled, as the first round is ongoing through the NHL playoffs.
